The Efficacy of Powerful Antioxidant: Pycnogenol
As there is a high interest in antioxidants, products containing antioxidants have been flooding the market. Abroad, there has long been a substance known as "Pycnogenol" extracted from pine tree bark, particularly highly regarded in this context. Pine bark has been used traditionally as a food source during times of hunger. It's said that within this bark, potent antioxidants known as bioflavonoids are present.

Pycnogenol®
Pycnogenol is not a single chemical compound. It refers to a complex of bioflavonoids extracted from the bark of the French Maritime Pine tree. It's labeled as "French Maritime Pine Bark Extract." Pycnogenol is the name given to the product made from this extract.
This is named specifically only when extracted from the thick bark (about 5-10 cm) of pine trees that have grown in the harsh winds and hot sun of the southern French coast, making it a valuable resource. It's so rare that only about 1 kg of Pycnogenol can be extracted from 1,000 kg of pine bark.
Research Findings
Pycnogenol is considered one of the most studied nutrients globally, with over 420 scientific articles published, over 160 clinical trials conducted, involving more than 10,000 participants. This extensive research spanning over 40 years attests to its effectiveness and safety.
According to an overseas paper published in 2014, a study with 60 adult men and women who took 150mg of Pycnogenol daily for 12 weeks showed a reduction of over 30% in the generation of active oxygen. The study also demonstrated improved cognitive abilities, concentration, and memory. In another study from 2015, a group of 47 men who took 60mg of Pycnogenol daily for 4 months showed an improvement in sperm quality and erectile function.
Furthermore, a study conducted in 2004 showed a significant decrease in blood glucose levels in a group of 77 type 2 diabetes patients who consumed 100mg of Pycnogenol daily for 12 weeks. Finally, a study from 2013 involving 170 women experiencing menopausal symptoms demonstrated a significant reduction in these symptoms after taking 60mg of Pycnogenol daily for 3 months.
Efficacy
Pycnogenol contains about 4,000 phytochemicals that potentially influence diseases like cancer, heart diseases, stroke, and arthritis. It has a superior antioxidant capacity compared to coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, alpha-lipoic acid, vitamin E, and grape seed extract. Beyond its antioxidant effects, Pycnogenol has a wide range of appealing health benefits, such as alleviating menopausal symptoms, promoting skin beauty, improving erectile dysfunction, enhancing sperm quality, boosting blood circulation, regulating blood sugar levels, potentially acting against cancer, exhibiting antiviral effects, and improving brain function.
Pycnogenol has passed the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) certification by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is used in 50 countries worldwide, recognized for its functionality. In South Korea, it has been recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for its individual functional claims related to women's health during menopause.
The officially recognized functions of Pycnogenol products available as follows:
- May help eliminate active oxygen (other function II).
- May help inhibit platelet aggregation (other function II).
1. Powerful Antioxidant for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention
Pycnogenol strengthens the body's cardiovascular system. Dr. Ronald Watson from the University of Arizona found that Pycnogenol enhances the action of eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthase), promoting normal blood vessel function by inhibiting abnormal platelet aggregation and relaxing constricted blood vessels, thereby improving blood circulation. Unlike some pharmaceuticals with side effects, Pycnogenol is confirmed to have no adverse effects.
2. Excellent Anti-Inflammatory Effects
In a small-scale preventive study on children with asthma, Pycnogenol was found to help alleviate symptoms. Additionally, it reduced the need for asthma medications in these patients.
3. Enhances Skin Health
Pycnogenol is known to bind with collagen in the skin, acting as a collagen stabilizer. This potent antioxidant promotes microcirculation in the skin's small blood vessels, enhancing the supply of air, nutrients, and moisture to the skin. These actions make the skin appear healthier and more radiant, which can be particularly beneficial for women concerned about their skin.
4. Alleviates Menopausal Symptoms
The relief of menopausal symptoms by Pycnogenol has been proven through clinical trials in countries like Japan and Taiwan, involving 381 menopausal women with similar physical conditions to women. Improvements in menopausal symptoms were observed from the fourth week of consumption, with significant improvements after 12 weeks. Moreover, Pycnogenol does not induce changes in hormonal levels like estrogen and insulin-like growth factor, making it a safe option for menopausal treatment without the risks associated with hormone therapy, such as breast cancer.
5. Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction is prevalent among men aged 40-50, with a rate approximately twice the global average. Besides psychological factors, it can also be a precursor to coronary artery diseases. Pycnogenol can potentially improve erectile dysfunction by enhancing endothelial function, particularly in patients with conditions like diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and smoking. There are studies indicating that a combination of Pycnogenol and L-arginine improved erectile dysfunction in 50% of the studied patients.
6. Improves Cholesterol Levels
Pycnogenol supports healthy vascular function and blood flow, helping to maintain normal blood pressure. Notably, it lowers harmful LDL cholesterol and increases beneficial HDL cholesterol levels.
7. Enhances Brain Function and Cognitive Abilities
Pycnogenol stimulates the production of nitric oxide, which regulates neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. This improved blood circulation in the brain enhances the supply of oxygen and nutrients, consequently boosting brain function. Clinical studies have shown that Pycnogenol can improve symptoms such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, increased concentration and memory in students, and enhanced cognitive function in working adults.
8. Eye Protection and Cataract Prevention
Aging often leads to ocular deterioration. Oxidative stress and metabolic byproducts accelerate eye tissue damage. Pycnogenol, a powerful antioxidant, can help protect vision, prevent cataracts, and promote retinal health. Notably, when taken in combination with lipid-soluble lutein, it exhibits a synergistic effect that improves retinal protection by approximately 60%.
Pycnogenol Side Effects
Pycnogenol may cause side effects under the following conditions:
Avoid using Pycnogenol before surgery or if you have bleeding disorders, as it can inhibit blood clotting.
It may exacerbate autoimmune diseases.
Minor side effects such as allergies or gastrointestinal issues may occur.
WebMD advises that Pycnogenol stimulates the immune system, so individuals with autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis should avoid taking it.
Product Selection Criteria
The core component of Pycnogenol is procyanidin, which is responsible for its red coloration. When choosing Pycnogenol supplements, it's crucial to consider the procyanidin content. Comparing the price and procyanidin content is essential when selecting Pycnogenol products.
