There are few things more frustrating than feeling backed up and constipated. Legapas 45ml drops is Pascoe's herbal laxative used to help relieve your acute or chronic constipation. Legapas is a stimulant laxative and softens stool to alleviate symptoms associated with constipation and digestive disturbances. Legapas will help with symptoms such as straining to have a bowel movement, lumpy or hard stools and passing fewer than three stools a week. It can also be used in cases of bloating and feeling as though you have had an incomplete bowel movement.

What is a Stimulant Laxative and Stool Softener?

Stimulant Laxatives, such as Legapas, contain active ingredients that irritate the large intestines to trigger rhythmic contractions to help eliminate stool. Popular over-the-counter laxatives include bisacodyl (Correctol, Dulcolax), sennosides (Ex-Lax, Senokot), castor oil, and the plant cascara. Legapas is made from a fluid extract of 500 mg Cascara Sagrada. This laxative is one of the faster-acting types of laxatives for constipation.

Legapas is a laxative that also helps to add moisture to the stool to prevent hardening. Stool softeners inhibit the reabsorption of water and electrolytes from the digestive system. Because of this, stool volume increases in the colon as it absorbs the extra water. Legapas is able to improve stool consistency and speed up bowel movements to relieve constipation. Stool softeners of similar character include Docusate, Bisacodyl, Colace and Pedia-lax. These laxatives may also come in the form of a suppository. A suppository is another way to deliver a laxative for constipation.

HOW TO USE: Adults and children (≥ 12 years): 0.9-1.5g (30-50 drops) once a day in half a cup of hot water in the mornings or evenings.

Allow 6 to 12 hours for laxative effect to occur. The maximum daily dose must not exceed 50 drops. The appropriate dose for a given patient is the lowest dose needed for soft, formed stools.

DURATION OF USE: Do not use for more than 7 days.

CAUTIONS AND WARNINGS: Do not use with abdominal pain, nausea, fever, vomiting, hemorrhoids. Do not use if taking thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, licorice root, or other drugs that may aggravate electrolyte imbalance. Do not use in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Do not use within 2 hours of another medicine. Use caution in a patient with a kidney disorder or who are taking heart medications. Reduce dose or discontinue use if abdominal cramps, spasms, and/or pain occur.

KNOWN ADVERSE REACTIONS: Very rarely cramp-like gastrointestinal symptoms; in these cases, the dose will have to be reduced. Harmless discolouration of your urine may occur. Prolonged use or use of higher doses (abuse) may cause disturbances of the water and electrolyte balance. Diarrhea may lead to potassium loss in particular. Potassium loss, in turn, may give rise to disorders of heart function and muscle weakness, especially if cardiac glycosides (drugs that strengthen the heart muscle), diuretics (drugs that increase urinary output), and/or cortisone and cortisone-like drugs (adrenal cortical steroids) are being taken concomitantly. Prolonged use may lead to excretion of protein and blood in the urine. Patients may also experience discolouration of the intestinal mucosa (pseudomelanosis coli), which usually resolves upon discontinuation of the product.

Medicinal ingredients: 1 g (33 drops) contains: Fluid extract (1:1.0-1.2) of 500 mg Cascara sagrada - Frangula purshiana (DC.) (bark, aged), standardized to 20 mg of hydroxyanthracene glycosides
calculated as Cascaroside A.
Non-medicinal ingredients: Purified water, alcohol. Contains 23% (V/V) alcohol.
