5-HTP stands for L-5-hydroxytryptophan, which comes from the amino acid tryptophan found in many proteins and the seeds of an African plant known as Griffonia simplicifolia. 5-HTP provides the amino acid building blocks in the production of serotonin – a key neurotransmitter.

Ultimately, those who wish to support mood balance or who are experiencing symptoms associated with fibromyalgia may benefit from 5-HTP in conjunction with a holistic health approach.  

Helps to reduce the severity and duration of migraine headaches when taken as a preventative (prophylactic).  Studies found that 5-HTP, taken preventatively, helped reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. 

To be used with a program of reduced intake of dietary calories and increased physical activity (if possible) to help in weight management by reducing carbohydrate cravings.

Adult Dosage

Adults (18 and over)

For healthy mood balance: take 1-2 capsules 3 times daily with food.

For relief of symptoms of fibromyalgia: take 2 capsules 3-4 times daily with food.

For migraine prophylactic: take 2 capsules 2-3 times daily with food 

To minimize gastrointestinal side effect risk, start at 50-100 mg, 2-3 times daily and slowly increase to an effective dose over 2 weeks. Use for at least 2 weeks to see beneficial effects. Do not exceed daily dose unless instructed by a healthcare practitioner. Swallow capsules whole.   

Cautions

Do not use if:

• you have scleroderma 

• you are taking antidepressants

• you are pregnant 

Ask a health care practitioner before use if:

• you are breastfeeding

• you are taking carbidopa or health products with serotonergic activity such as mood balance supplements, cough medication containing dextromethorphan, pain killers or medications for nausea or migraine 

• (Healthy mood balance, Fibromyalgia) you have a psychological disorder such as anxiety or depression 

Ask a health care practitioner:

When using this product:

• you may experience gastrointestinal discomfort/disturbances

• exercise caution while driving or using machinery, as you may experience drowsiness     

Stop use and ask a health care practitioner if you experience skin hardening, pain or stiffness of muscles or joints, tremors, agitation/confusion, or an increased heart rate.
